On Monday, was the 10-year anniversary of Alien: Isolation’s release, developer Creative Assembly confirmed that a sequel to the survival horror classic is in early development.
Creative Director Al Hope, who also led development on the first game, made the announcement via a statement on X/Twitter. “On the 10th anniversary, it seems only fitting to let you know that we have heard your distress calls loud and clear,” Hope said. “Today, I’m delighted to confirm, on behalf of the team, that a sequel to Alien: Isolation is in early development. We look forward to sharing more details with you when we’re ready.”
While Creative Assembly has yet to announce a final title, release window, or target platforms for the sequel, the confirmation has generated significant excitement among fans. Since the first game’s release, fans had consistently requested a sequel, but its existence comes as a surprise. Despite its strong initial reception, Alien: Isolation sold 2.11 million copies in its first six months—numbers that Sega deemed insufficient to call the game a commercial success.
Studio director Tim Heaton had addressed the possibility of a sequel back in 2015, noting, “Alien: Isolation 2 is not out of the question because we’re so proud of it and there’s possibly more to be said. But do we really want to be spending very significant amounts of money and getting close to break-even or just about in the black? That’s not where Sega wants to be.” Nonetheless, demand from fans and the enduring legacy of the first game appear to have led Creative Assembly and Sega to give the green light for the sequel.
Alien: Isolation has remained a standout title in the survival horror genre. The game, which captures the tense atmosphere of the Alien franchise, is still widely regarded as one of the most memorable horror experiences in gaming, with fans continuing to celebrate its design and impact on the genre.
In addition to the Alien: Isolation sequel, Creative Assembly is currently working on several other projects, including a potential Total War game set in the Star Wars universe. The studio has also faced challenges in recent years, such as the cancellation of its live-service shooter Hyenas and the underwhelming reception of Total War: Pharaoh. Despite these setbacks, the Alien: Isolation sequel marks a significant milestone for the studio as it moves forward.
As the Alien franchise continues to expand, the success of recent entries like Alien: Romulus—which earned over $300 million globally—further boosts anticipation for the upcoming Alien: Earth TV series set to release in 2025, further solidifying the resurgence of the Alien universe in popular culture. Fans of the franchise and the original Alien: Isolation now eagerly await further news on this highly anticipated sequel.
