A major breach has just hit gaming juggernaut Valve and its Steam platform. The leak has revealed achievement lists for over 100 upcoming and unannounced games, along with potential story elements from those games. Games affected by the leak on Steam include Persona 6, Kingdom Hearts IV, Gears of War, and more.
What We Need to Know
- The unreleased achievements originally appeared on the Exophase website.
- The website focuses on tracking achievements on Steam.
- In total, over 100 games have appeared on the website as part of the achievement leak so far. No one knows how many games will be affected by the time this is over.
What Effect Will the Leak have on Developers and Publishers?
The effect this leak will have on developers and publishers completely depends on how descriptive or vague the descriptions of the listed achievements are. Potential achievement rewards could reference pivotal characters, bosses, and story events. The breadth of the potential damage to characters and plot could be catastrophic for a developer of an upcoming title. The aftermath truly all depends on the scenario.
As of right now, the gaming industry and community have no idea how developers and publishers will respond to the Steam leak. Valve, developers, and publishers are in crisis management as they determine how best to deal with this potential leak. Only time will tell how many planned, upcoming, and unannounced titles will be affected by this leak.
