New Miami Vice Movie in Development with Director of Top Gun: Maverick

Dust off the pastel suits and crank up the synthwave—Miami Vice is getting a cinematic reboot, and this time it’s in the hands of a director who knows exactly how to bring the heat.

Joseph Kosinski, the visionary filmmaker behind Top Gun: Maverick, is officially set to direct a new Miami Vice movie for Universal Pictures, as confirmed by PEOPLE and industry outlets like THR and Deadline. And while reviving retro properties is practically Hollywood’s love language these days, this one hits different—because Kosinski doesn’t just remake. He reinvents.

A Second Shot at the Big Screen

Miami Vice 2006 Starring Jamie Foxx & Colin Farrell

This isn’t Miami Vice’s first time on the silver screen. In 2006, Michael Mann—who helped define the tone and aesthetic of the original series—directed a theatrical version starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. That film leaned into gritty realism and a darker tone but received mixed reactions from critics and fans. Despite its visual boldness and ambition, it struggled to recapture the cultural spark of the original show.

With Kosinski at the helm, Universal’s new attempt appears to be aiming for a blend of cinematic scope and stylistic precision. His track record suggests a strong eye for blending nostalgia with modern storytelling, a balance that proved successful with Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed nearly $1.5 billion globally and reignited interest in legacy franchises.

Gilroy’s Pen, Kosinski’s Vision

Dan Gilroy brings a sharp, cerebral edge to the project. His work on Nightcrawler was praised for its unsettling tension and character-driven storytelling. Partnered with Kosinski’s visual and technical precision, the creative direction for Miami Vice seems to be rooted in contemporary relevance while maintaining the original’s stylistic DNA.

What’s Next for Kosinski

The Miami Vice reboot is just one of several high-profile projects connected to Kosinski. His upcoming film F1, starring Brad Pitt, is slated for a June 27 release. Shot at real Formula 1 Grand Prix events, the movie aims to bring authenticity and cinematic flair to the racing world.

Though Top Gun 3 has not been officially greenlit, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed in March 2024 that a story has been pitched to Tom Cruise. While Cruise reportedly liked the idea, scheduling remains a hurdle. “He’s a very in-demand actor and he’s got a lot of movies lined up,” Bruckheimer told PEOPLE.

The Legacy and the Opportunity

The original Miami Vice wasn’t just a television show—it became a visual and cultural landmark. From its music-driven storytelling to its stylized depiction of crime and fashion, the series helped define a generation’s aesthetic. Translating that into a modern film is a complex challenge, but one that Kosinski seems uniquely equipped to tackle.

If executed with the right mix of reverence and reinvention, the new Miami Vice could do more than revive a beloved brand—it could reframe it for a new generation entirely.
