FN Introduces M3M Endurance, Extending Service Life to 60,000 Rounds

The M2 Browning machine gun, better known as the Ma Deuce, has been a fixture of the U.S. military for nearly a century. Designed by John Browning, the heavy machine gun has served across air, land, and sea platforms and remains a defining part of modern military history.

But even an enduring design isn’t immune to change. In 2010, the U.S. Army adopted a quick-change barrel system that eliminated the need to manually reset headspace and timing during barrel replacement. Now, FN is pushing the evolution of its .50-caliber machine gun family further with the M3M Endurance, a new variant designed to extend service life and reduce maintenance demands.

What We Need to Know

Who Is This For?

Military applications only. The FN M3M Endurance is designed for integration into military weapon systems across air, land, and maritime platforms. FN also identifies ground-based applications, including counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) missions, among its intended uses.

The Bottom Line

The FN M3M Endurance focuses on a practical challenge facing military units: keeping crew-served weapons operational while reducing the time and resources required to maintain them. By extending the stated service life from 40,000 to 60,000 rounds and tripling preventive maintenance intervals, FN aims to reduce armourer workload, lower logistical demands, and improve weapon availability.

The Endurance retains the M3M’s 1,100-round-per-minute firing rate while addressing the long-term demands of keeping the weapon in service. Rather than relying on a higher rate of fire or an entirely new operating concept, FN’s latest development focuses on longevity and sustainment two factors that can make a meaningful difference when equipment needs to remain ready for service.
