Fable Reboot Delayed to 2026: Microsoft Promises It’s “Worth the Wait”
The world of Albion may be a little further away than fans had hoped. Microsoft has officially delayed the highly anticipated Fable reboot from its original 2025 release window to an unspecified date in 2026. But while the wait has grown longer, the promise of a rich and vibrant return to the beloved franchise remains as strong as ever.
The new Fable, a reboot of the iconic Xbox series originally developed by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios, is being crafted by Playground Games, the UK-based studio best known for the acclaimed Forza Horizon racing series. The switch from fast cars to fantasy worlds might seem like an unusual leap, but Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan assures fans that Playground’s expertise will shine through in this ambitious project.
A Promise of Quality Over Speed

Speaking on the latest episode of the Xbox Podcast, Duncan expressed his confidence in the Playground team, emphasizing that the extended timeline is all about delivering a top-tier experience. “We previously announced the date for Fable as 2025. We are actually going to give Fable more time, and it’s going to ship in 2026 now,” Duncan explained.
While acknowledging that delays can be disappointing, Duncan was steadfast in his optimism: “What I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait. I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team… Just think of the visuals of what you expect of Playground games plus amazing gameplay, British humor, Playground’s version of Albion.”
Duncan pointed to Playground’s track record with the Forza Horizon series—known for its stunning visuals and seamless gameplay—as evidence of what the team could bring to Fable. He teased a “beautifully realized version of Albion” that blends the whimsical charm of the original franchise with modern visual fidelity and engaging gameplay.
A Glimpse of the New Albion
Alongside the delay announcement, Microsoft shared a tantalizing 50-second slice of pre-alpha gameplay footage. Though brief, the clip offered a first taste of Fable’s combat, world design, and, yes, a bit of the series’ signature chicken-kicking humor.
The footage showcased city streets bustling with life, a serene horse ride through a lush forest, and combat featuring a variety of weapons including a one-handed sword, a two-handed hammer, and a fireball magic attack. One memorable cutscene showed a character baiting a trap with sausages to lure a werewolf-like creature—only for the main character to dive into battle with it.
The visual style appears to hit that sweet spot between fantasy realism and the playful, storybook quality that helped make the original Fable games so memorable. The pre-alpha build already demonstrates the kind of attention to detail that could set this reboot apart, underscoring Duncan’s confidence in Playground’s ability to bring the world of Albion to life like never before.
A Journey of Rebirth
The road to Fable’s return has been a winding one. Originally announced in 2020 as a “new beginning” for the franchise, fans have been eagerly piecing together clues about the game’s direction ever since. The 2023 Xbox Game Showcase offered a glimpse into the project with a quirky reveal featuring The IT Crowd’s Richard Ayoade. More recently, in June 2024, a fresh trailer debuted during Microsoft’s Xbox Showcase, further teasing the ambitious revival of this cherished series.
This new installment marks the first mainline Fable game since 2010’s Fable 3, and it’s clear that Microsoft is positioning it as one of Xbox Game Studios’ flagship titles. It’s not just a comeback—it’s a reimagining designed to appeal to both longtime fans and a new generation of players.
A Bright Future for Albion
While waiting another year for Fable may not be what fans wanted, the extended timeline is a reassuring sign that Microsoft and Playground Games are committed to getting it right. Delays, when handled well, often lead to better games—titles that feel polished, complete, and true to their vision.
As the Fable reboot inches closer to release, the pieces are falling into place. The combination of Playground’s technical prowess, the rich lore of Albion, and a fresh approach to storytelling could deliver something truly special. If the glimpses we’ve seen so far are any indication, the Fable reboot has the potential to not only meet expectations but exceed them—ushering in a new era for one of Xbox’s most beloved franchises.
For now, we wait. But will Duncan’s words ring true and will it be worth that wait? Only time will tell.
