Live-Action Legend of Zelda Movie Set for 2027 Release—Here’s What We Know So Far
Nintendo has finally set a date for its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. Fans can mark their calendars—Zelda will hit the big screen on March 26, 2027. The news was revealed through Nintendo’s new Nintendo Today! app, a fresh digital hub designed to deliver daily updates directly to players.
A Long Time Coming

The Zelda film was first announced in November 2023, with gaming icon Shigeru Miyamoto confirming his involvement as a producer alongside Avi Arad (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). Since then, details have been scarce, but what we do know is promising. The film will be directed by Wes Ball, best known for The Maze Runner trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Ball has hinted at a visually stunning, “grounded” adaptation, even describing it as “live-action Miyazaki”—a nod to the legendary Studio Ghibli filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle).
Nintendo’s Big-Screen Ambitions

Nintendo has been cautious about bringing its properties to Hollywood, but the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie—which grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide—has clearly reinforced the company’s commitment to filmmaking. Unlike Mario, which was a colorful animated adventure, Zelda is being positioned as a more serious, cinematic experience.
With Nintendo taking the lead on production and Sony Pictures co-financing, the film already has a strong foundation. However, many crucial details—such as casting and storyline—remain under wraps. Will we see a faithful adaptation of Ocarina of Time? A fresh take on Breath of the Wild? For now, fans can only speculate.
Stay Tuned for More
With Nintendo promising frequent updates through its Nintendo Today! app, we may not have to wait long for new details. As Miyamoto himself put it, “It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
For now, the countdown is officially on.
