Xbox Steps Up to Publish Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT After PlayStation Exit

Overnight, PlayStation Studios announced that the company has decided to step away from Hideo Kojima’s upcoming PHYSINT game, which Kojima has described as a “genre-defining action-espionage” title. In the 11th hour, Xbox Game Studios has stepped in as the new publisher of the unreleased title.

What We Need to Know

In 2024, Hideo Kojima announced that he was working on a brand-new action-espionage game, with PlayStation Studios partnering with him as the publisher. Fast-forward to 2026, and PlayStation is stepping away from the project after “careful consideration.” Below is the press release for full context.

“An update from PlayStation Studios: After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for the game. Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future.”

In Kojima’s response to PlayStation’s departure, he stated that he was notified in mid-June that PlayStation wanted to cancel PHYSINT. After this revelation, Kojima sought another publisher and found Xbox as a new partner that shared common goals and interests. Here is his statement on the situation.

“As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner.

In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.”

The Bottom Line

Last night, PlayStation Studios walked away from one of the industry’s biggest creators and one of the most innovative independent AAA studios in the industry. This could be due to greater financial struggles stemming from PlayStation’s pursuit of live-service video games and their lack of success, which left the gaming giant in limbo over whether it should keep or abandon the project. Ultimately, PlayStation cut ties, allowing Xbox to step in as publisher and bring PHYSINT to gamers on its console.

Kojima’s PHYSINT is still a few years away, at least. We might see it on the next-generation Xbox console. There is a slim chance it may make it to the current generation, but I doubt it. Now, we must wait for any future news regarding PHYSINT and its development from Hideo Kojima and his team at Kojima Productions.
