Last weekend, the Joker movie surpassed the $1 billion dollar mark in world wide ticket sales. Last Friday, it began the weekend at $999 million plus dollars in box office revenue, easily passing the $1 billion mark this past weekend. Domestically, Joker raked in $317 million dollars at the local box office. Joker becomes the seventh Warner Brothers film to pass the billion dollar mark in worldwide box office ticket sales. Three of the four movies have been within the DC Comic/Batman universes.

Joker joins The Dark Knight ( $1 billion), The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 ($1.34 billion), The Lord of The Rings: Return of the King ($1.12 billion), and The Hobbit: Unexpected Journey ($1.01 billion).

Joker sits behind Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises at no.44 of all time top box office earners.

This movie had been a surprise and money maker for Warner Brothers. The Joker movie had a modest budget of $62.5 million dollars to make the Todd Philips movie. It took Philips two years to sell Warner Brothers on this Rated R version of the Crown Prince of Crime. That gamble by Warner Bros. has paid off in spades.

The movie has had a remarkable success and run since its won top honors at the Vince Film Festival. The Joker open weekend numbers was $96 million dollars domestically. After it’s initial weekend sales for the movie stayed strong. The same effect happened worldwide with an initial box office of $152 million dollar. Again keeping strong ticket sales after opening weekend. Joker broke all-time box office records in 14 countries, grossed over $100 million in Latin America alone, and broke DC movie records in 34 countries worldwide.

Before it’s fourth weekend in theaters Joker surpassed Deadpool 2 as the highest grossing Rated R movie ever. Deadpool 2 garnered $785 million in worldwide box office sales.

All in all Joker was a win for Todd Philips, Joaquin Phoenix, and Warner Bros. They took a risk on a visionary idea of the Clown Prince of Crime.
