Yesterday, Ruger had the firearms community and social media buzzing with the release of the Ruger-57, chambered in the exotic FN 5.7 ammunition. Now, we have renowned self defense ammo manufacturer Speer Gold Dot releasing defensive ammo for 5.7 cartridge. It seems like Ruger and Speer are look to bring fresh blood into the 5.7 cartridge.
The new 5.7×28 round is using Speer’s exclusive Uni-Cor method. This method allow Speer to bond the jacket to the core one molecule at a time. This process eliminates core-jacket separation, which is the leading cause of bullet failures. The new 5.7 round is loaded with 40 grain jacketed hollow point bullet. With an estimated 2,000 feet per second. (Taking this estimate from FN 5.7×28 blue tip ammunition which clocks in at 2,034 FPS.)
Below is the press release from Speer about their new 5.7×28 self defense ammunition.
Insist on more from your 5.7x28mm. Speer® has broken new ground for the cartridge with an all-new Gold Dot® load—the first 5.7x28mm round specifically designed for self-defense. Like all Gold Dot ammunition, the bullet is built using Speer’s exclusive Uni-Cor® method. The jacket is bonded to the core one atom at a time, virtually eliminating core-jacket separation and creating a projectile that’s accurate, tough and consistent through all common barriers. High-quality brass, reliable primers and specially formulated propellant produce optimal feeding and ballistics in 5.7x28mm firearms.
Speer’s new self defense 5.7 ammunition will be sold in 50-round boxes with a retail price of $51.95. Which makes it a $1.03 a round per MSRP. This new defensive ammunition from Speer is expensive but, you are buying high-end defensive ammunition. Defense ammunition for all calibers tend to be more expensive than their normal ammunition load out.
What do you think about Speer’s new 5.7 defense ammunition? Does the new Ruger-57 and Speer’s ammunition make a compelling purchase? Let us know in the comments below.
