Welcome to back to the Top 5 series! It’s been a very long hiatus from the Top 5 series, but we’re back with a reboot of the series, ready to dive into another exciting list.

Deciding the focus of the next Top 5 article is always challenging. There are so many weapon platforms and categories to choose from that it can become overwhelming. For this article, I’ve decided to highlight the iconic HK MP5 and its variants.

An Iconic Submachine Gun

The HK MP5 is one of the most widely known and instantly recognizable 9mm submachine guns in the world. It has been a mainstay in law enforcement and military communities since its inception. This iconic submachine gun has appeared in countless movies, comics, and video games over its 50-plus years of existence. It has been featured in movies such as Rambo, The Kingdom, S.W.A.T., The Negotiator, Blackhawk Down, Training Day, and many more. It’s also used in video games such as the Call of Duty series, Battlefield, and Counter-Strike, along with countless TV shows and comic book series.

The MP5 is the jack-of-all-trades when it comes to versatility. If you need a compact and easily concealable weapon, there’s the MP5K. If you want an MP5 with an integrated light, choose the MP5A2 with a Surefire light built into the forend. If you need to move with quiet precision, there’s the MP5SD. With a multitude of variants, the MP5 can be tailored to fit any role. As you can see, the MP5 is adaptable and versatile submachine gun trusted by the military, law enforcement, and federal agencies around the globe.

Before we jump into the Top 5 list, let’s take a quick look at the history of the MP5.

History of the HK MP5

The Heckler & Koch MP5 is a 9mm submachine gun developed by a team of German engineers in the early 1960s. It evolved from the G3 battle rifle that is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. The MP5 was part of the fourth group of firearms developed under the HK G3 architecture and was initially known as the HK54.

Work on the MP5 began in 1964, and two years later, the German Federal Police, German Special Forces, and Border Agents were using the MP54. This designation didn’t stick for the future icon, and it later became known as the MP5.

British SAS operator using the MP5

In the 1980s, the MP5 achieved iconic status when it was used on live television during the SAS raid on the Iranian Embassy in London. During this operation, five terrorists were killed, and the hostages held in the embassy were rescued. Since then, the MP5 has become a staple in law enforcement and military communities, further cementing its iconic status.

Now that we’ve covered the history of the MP5, let’s get into the Top 5 Movies featuring the MP5.

Top 5 Movies Featuring the Iconic HK MP5 Submachine Gun

5. Sicario – Border Ambush Scene

Sicario provides a dark, gritty, and honest look at the complexities of the War on Drugs in America. The film is graphic, grim, and intense in its message and violence, featuring well-paced and intensely choreographed gunfighting scenes.

Alejandro Gillick, played by Benicio Del Toro, demonstrates ruthless efficiency with an MP5 SD during the border ambush scene. It’s impressive to see Del Toro use the MP5 SD with such precision, reinforcing the character’s formidable nature. For an excellent example of the MP5 SD in action, look no further than this memorable scene from Sicario.

4. Speed – Jack and Harry Clearing a Building

In the beginning of Speed, LAPD S.W.A.T. Officers Jack (Keanu Reeves) and Harry (Jeff Daniels) respond to reports of a hostage situation. They gear up with MP5 A3s and clear the building, searching for hostages and perpetrators. The extortionist/bomber, later identified as Howard Payne, becomes the main antagonist of the film. Throughout this part of the movie, we see Jack and Harry wield their HK MP5 A3s, saving lives and confronting danger.

Firearms enthusiasts will note that the weapons used are actually HK94 A3s, modified to resemble MP5 A3s, with Surefire lights integrated into the forends.

3. Lethal Weapon 2 – Riggs Beach Shootout

The Lethal Weapon franchise features extensive use of the MP5 and its variants. A standout scene is the beach shootout at Riggs’ trailer. Riggs, using his Special Forces training, outwits and outshoots Rudd’s goons, even engaging a helicopter with an MP5 to give Hass time to escape. This scene showcases Riggs’ combat prowess and the versatility of the MP5.

2. The Matrix – The Lobby Scene

The first Matrix movie is a sci-fi and cyberpunk classic, featuring excellently choreographed slow-motion fight scenes and over-the-top gunplay. Legendary fight choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping blended Eastern and Western action sensibilities, which significantly influenced the action movie genre.

One of the best scenes with the MP5 is when Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) enter a corporate building to rescue Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) from Agent Smith. Neo, armed with an MP5K, lays waste to security guards in a brief but memorable moment, as we witness his transformation into “The One.”

Honorable Mention

Bad Boys II – Tapia’s Mansion Shootout

The Tapia Mansion shootout is a favorite action scene of mine, featuring classic Michael Bay elements: a beautiful setting, a big set piece, and big explosions. In this climactic scene, Mike (Will Smith), Marcus (Martin Lawrence), DEA agents, Miami SWAT, and Cuban resistance fighters storm Tapia’s mansion to rescue Marcus’s sister Syd (Gabrielle Union) from danger.

Mike wields an MP5SD with a red dot and light attached, disposing of Tapia’s henchmen with surgical precision. This scene exemplifies the tactical advantage that the quiet MP5SD provides.

1. Die Hard – Yippee-Ki-Yay Motherfucker

The number one movie on the list is Die Hard, an action movie classic and a favorite Christmas movie for action lovers worldwide. Die Hard has all the right elements: a resourceful and smart cop (John McClane), a notorious antagonist (Hans Gruber), and a compelling motivation (saving his wife from terrorists).

Throughout the movie, McClane (Bruce Willis) uses his wit and resourcefulness to outsmart and defeat Gruber and his crew, often relying on his trusty MP5. The scene that stands out is McClane’s iconic line, “Yippee-Ki-Yay, motherfucker,” delivered with the MP5 in hand, epitomizing his defiant and relentless spirit.

These movies highlight the versatility and impact of the HK MP5, solidifying its place in both the real world and pop culture.
