Today, two hundred forty-eight years ago, brave men of the Second Continental Congress stood against the tyranny of a monarchy. By standing against that tyranny, they declared their independence from its reign. The Declaration of Independence invoked the ideas of freedom and defiance, certain unalienable rights, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for its people.

The Revolutionary War that had already begun was hard and cruel, yet a defining moment upon our nation’s character. The war against Great Britain defined and forged our ideals, values, and spirit in the fires of trials and tribulations. These ideals, values, and the American spirit are meant to be a beacons of freedom, justice, and liberty to its people and other nations. Here in this nation, we as Americans hold liberty and freedom above all else. It is a cornerstone of our nation, founded two hundred forty-eight years ago when we stood up against the tyranny of a king.

With the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the men of the Second Continental Congress laid the foundation for this nation. A nation that is seeking a more perfect union. A union that seeks equality, justice, liberty, and freedom.

Along the road, we have had to grow as a nation. We are not a perfect union as we stand before you today. As a country, we have had our growing pains: the Civil War and the end of slavery, segregation and Jim Crow laws, women’s right to vote, and so much more. These are just a few examples of when America has not stood up to those ideals. At the same time, these are examples of America growing and forming a more perfect union for its people.

These moments were a litmus test of America’s character to stand against injustice, tyranny, and inequality. To stand for the ideals and promises of freedom, liberty, and justice for every man and woman of this great nation. Our nation’s character has been tested and when being tested we have fought to aspire to the ideals, values, and freedoms that document invokes. By doing so we have changed the course of this nation and the world.

Today is a time of reflection to remember the founding of this nation. It is a time to appreciate the freedoms that we have here that so many nations yearn for such as: the freedom of speech and press, judicial systems of due process, the right to keep and bear arms, along with the systems of checks and balances of government power. What we have here in America, people of other nations crave for. Some are currently fighting for those freedoms as we speak. So, take a moment to reflect, honor, and appreciate the freedoms we hold.

Without the brave men of the Second Continental Congress standing against tyranny and proclaiming our sovereignty as a nation and people, our nation as it stands today would not be possible. It is because of these revolutionaries we hold the freedoms we cherish today.
