On Saturday, Marvel Studios shocked the comic book world and the MCU by announcing the return of Robert Downey Jr. to play the iconic villain Dr. Doom. It seems Marvel and Disney have left no stone unturned in reviving the glory days of the MCU by also bringing back the Russo Brothers to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers are returning to the MCU, and all three were paid a king’s ransom for their return to the universe they helped build into a billion-dollar juggernaut for Marvel Studios and its parent company, Disney.

According to an article from Variety, the Russo Brothers will reportedly be paid $80 million to direct the next two Avengers movies. Additionally, the Russos will be co-producing the films with Marvel Studios under their production house banner, AGBO. While the deal does not include back-end compensation, it does contain performance escalators that kick in at $750 million and $1 billion box office thresholds.
Regarding Robert Downey Jr. (RDJ), Marvel essentially backed up the money truck to bring back the G.O.A.T. of the MCU for the next two Avengers movies. Reports indicate that RDJ is being paid significantly more than the Russo Brothers, with estimates close to $100 million for his return. To secure the deal, RDJ had significant asks woven into his contract, including having the Russo Brothers direct the films, a private jet for travel, and an entire trailer encampment on set.

It seems Marvel Studios went the extra mile to secure Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers, potentially using their star power to revitalize its struggling franchise post-Infinity Wars Saga. Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark in the original 2008 Iron Man is what started it all and turned the MCU into a multi-billion dollar movie franchise. So it’s not surprising that Disney was willing to back up the Mack truck to ensure the return of Robert Downey Jr. in a meaningful way.
