Annapurna Interactive Gaming Division Resigns Following Internal Conflict
Annapurna Interactive’s gaming division has been hit by a major upheaval as the entire team resigned following a dispute over leadership. According to a report from Bloomberg, the company’s president, Nathan Gary, had been in discussions with Annapurna’s founder, Megan Ellison, to separate the gaming segment into its own independent entity. However, when Ellison backed out of these negotiations, Gary made the decision to resign, prompting nearly 30 other employees to follow suit, including key figures like division co-heads Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella.
In a joint statement, Gary and the departing staff expressed their sorrow, saying, “All 25 members of the Annapurna Interactive team collectively resigned. This was one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make and we did not take this action lightly.”
Amidst these tensions, Annapurna Interactive had already begun restructuring, bringing on Hector Sanchez, a former Epic Games executive, as president of interactive and new media, and Paul Doyle as head of strategy. Sanchez was initially poised to take over Annapurna’s gaming division once the spin-off was completed. However, with Gary and the rest of the team now out, Sanchez has stepped in to lead the company through this challenging time.
As the dust settles, Sanchez has been working to reassure partner developers that Annapurna will continue to honor its existing contracts. A company spokesperson also confirmed that plans are in place to backfill the vacated roles, while some gaps may be filled by collaborating with third-party partners to keep projects on track.
This mass resignation marks a significant turning point for Annapurna Interactive, a company known for publishing critically acclaimed indie games such as Outer Wilds and What Remains of Edith Finch. What lies ahead for both Annapurna and its former gaming division remains uncertain, but the leadership shake-up signals a profound shift in the company’s direction.
