Jacob Grey Nox 9: A Performance-Driven Handgun for the Discerning Shooter
At Shot Show, Jacob Grey introduced its flagship pistol, the Nox 9, the culmination of decades of hard-earned experience on the 1911/2011 platform distilled into a single, uncompromising handgun. Built by founder Jacob Grey and his team, the Nox 9 represents the apex of precision machining, hand-fit craftsmanship, and performance-driven design. This is not a mass-produced pistol; it’s a purpose-built, high-performance platform intended for shooters who understand exactly what they’re looking for.
From the start, the Nox 9 was engineered to be more than just another premium 2011. Every design decision reflects an attention to detail focus on reliability, performance, and refinement resulting in a pistol that feels deliberate in every interaction, from racking the slide to breaking the trigger.
Built From the Block Up

Every Jacob Grey Nox 9 begins life as a solid block of aerospace-grade aluminum. The Nox 9 features no castings, no MIM parts, no shortcuts. The slide is machined from 416 stainless steel, while the frame is cut from 4140 steel, both finished in a durable DLC coating. From there, Jacob Grey’s gunsmiths hand-fit the slide, frame, barrel, and internals to exacting tolerances.
The result is a pistol that cycles effortlessly and racks with a smoothness that immediately sets it apart. It’s the kind of fitment you feel the moment you pick it up it’s tight where it matters, fluid where it counts.
Thoughtful Design, Purposeful Performance
The Nox 9’s design language is clean, modern, and intentional. Front and rear slide serrations provide confident manipulation without being overly aggressive, while the 5-inch integrally compensated barrel is finished in Copper Canyon DLC. The ports and compensator help reduce recoil and keep the gun tracking predictably under rapid strings of fire.
Key features include:
• 5” integrally compensated barrel
• Optics-ready slide
• Ambidextrous safety (grip safety deleted)
• 2.5-pound trigger pull
• Textured grip with Jacob Grey’s X-pattern
The deletion of the traditional backstrap safety allows the grip to be reshaped and contoured to better interface with the shooter’s hand. The lower portion of the backstrap subtly flares to sit flush with the dominant hand, improving leverage and recoil control without compromising comfort.
Handling Impressions: Precision You Can Feel

While I didn’t have the opportunity to shoot the Nox 9 on the range, multiple hands-on sessions on the show floor provided a clear sense of what this pistol is capable of in the right hands.
Ergonomics are outstanding. The grip geometry locks your hand in naturally, and the X-pattern texturing provides security without abrasion. The trigger is exceptional, featuring a defined wall, a straight pull, with a clean break at 2.5 pounds. Followed by a short, tactile reset that competition shooters will immediately appreciate.
Slide manipulation is where the Nox 9 truly shines. It’s buttery smooth, effortless, and controlled, refined in a way that’s hard to miss. Everything about the gun communicates precision and intent.
Who the Nox 9 Is For

The Jacob Grey Nox 9 isn’t built for everyone and that’s the point. This is a pistol for serious competitive shooters in disciplines like USPSA or IPSC, for collectors who appreciate true craftsmanship, and for experienced shooters who can extract its full performance envelope and theirs.
In many ways, the Nox 9 feels like a supercar in the firearms world: breathtaking in execution, unforgiving if mishandled, and deeply rewarding when driven properly. It’s a legacy-grade pistol designed for those who demand the absolute best.
