FN America has experienced great success with the FN 509 series of pistols. At Shot Show 2024, FN America announced the expansion of the 509 series, which includes new models, limited-edition colors, pistol configurations, and compensator kits to reduce felt recoil and aid in faster follow-up shots. These upgrades and additions mark the continuation and evolution of the 509 series, which currently spans over 18 variants across the civilian and law enforcement sectors.
FN 509 CC Edge XL
One of the new pistols coming to the FN 509 series is the FN 509 CC Edge XL. This new setup showcases the versatility and modularity of the 509 platform. The new XL variant of the CC Edge will feature a compensated compact slide with a full-size frame, essentially morphing the CC Edge XL into a Glock 19x style pistol with the added bonus of being compensated from the factory. The CC Edge lineup features a quick-detachable compensator, which eliminates recoil by 25%, according to FN. While the LS Edge frame provides solid ergonomics to allow shooters to achieve a high grip on the pistol along with a natural wrist angle, which allows the shooter a natural point of aim. The Edge XL grip also has improved texturing allowing shooters to lock their grip in even amongst sweaty hands. The compensated slide in coordination with the LS Edge grip allows for quicker follow-up shots and faster sight picture recovery.
FN 509 MRD (Full Size)
FN America is introducing a full-size version and compensated compact version of the FN 509 MRD. The full-size version of the FN 509 MRD will feature a 4.5-inch match-grade barrel, suppressor height sights, and come optics ready. The full-size FN 509 MRD is meant to be a direct competitor to the G17 and SIG P320.
FN 509 Compact MRD
Next, we have the FN 509 Compact MRD which is a compensated variant of the compact. This version features the same compensator from the FN 509 CC Edge. The compensator will reduce felt recoil by 25%, as stated before. The FN 509 MRD will feature ambidextrous controls, an adjustable back strap, suppressor height sights, and come optics-ready. The pistol will include one 12-round and one 15-round magazine.
FN Compensator Kit
Finally, we have the FN compensator kit. The kit is compatible with the FN 509 Standard, Compact, or Midsize models. The compensator kit features the quick-detach system developed by FN for tool-less removal of the comp when cleaning. The comp reduces felt recoil by 25% due to its v-shape porting design.
The additions to the FN 509 series by FN America show that it is seeking to evolve the series and potentially listen to customer feedback by giving the end-user the upgrades they are looking for. Hopefully, this investment will see the brand flourish and spur the creation of aftermarket support for the pistol. Only time will tell.
