Ghostbusters Animated Series Gets Greenlight from Netflix
Netflix has officially announced a new Ghostbusters animated series, according to an exclusive from Variety. The streaming giant has given the green light to the project, which will be written and executive produced by Elliot Kalan.
The revival of a Ghostbusters animated series was first announced back in June 2022, but details about the plot remain scarce. Sources close to the project have revealed that it will be a 3D animated series and will align with the most recent Ghostbusters films.
Sony Pictures Animation is at the helm of the series, with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan from Ghost Corps, Inc. also serving as executive producers, along with Kalan. Reitman and Kenan were responsible for writing and directing the last two Ghostbusters movies, which helped reignite interest in the franchise. Jason Reitman directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife, while Kenan took the reins for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. The series’ production will be managed by Ghost Corps, which is housed under Sony’s Columbia Pictures.
Elliot Kalan brings an impressive resume to the table. He is best known for his work on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where he earned four Emmy Awards for his writing. Kalan also served as the head writer for Netflix’s Mystery Science Theater 3000.
This new animated series will mark the third time Ghostbusters has been adapted for the small screen. The original The Real Ghostbusters cartoon aired 140 episodes from 1986-1991, closely following the characters from the original films. That series was followed by Extreme Ghostbusters, which aired for 40 episodes and introduced a new generation of Ghostbusters led by Egon Spengler.
The return of Ghostbusters in animated form is set to bring the franchise’s beloved paranormal adventures to a new generation of fans, while honoring the legacy that has captivated audiences for decades.
