PlayStation Network Restored After Extended Outage, Sony Offers PlayStation Plus Compensation
The PlayStation Network (PSN) went offline worldwide on Friday, February 7, in one of the largest outages in its history. For nearly 24 hours, players were unable to sign in, access online gaming, or make purchases from the PlayStation Store. By Saturday evening, February 8, Sony had fully restored services, citing an unspecified “operational issue” as the cause.
A Widespread Disruption

Reports of the outage first surfaced around 6 p.m. ET on Friday, with PlayStation’s official support account acknowledging the issue at 8:45 p.m. ET. The outage affected all PlayStation platforms, including the PS5, PS4, and even legacy systems like the PS3 and PS Vita. The PlayStation status page remained red throughout the night, confirming that all services were down.
By Saturday afternoon, some users reported being able to log back in, and by the evening, Sony declared PSN fully operational. This marked one of the longest PSN disruptions ever, second only to the infamous 2011 outage, which lasted several weeks.
Player Frustration and Call of Duty’s Double XP Weekend
Throughout the outage, thousands of frustrated players flooded social media demanding answers. Call of Duty fans were particularly vocal, as the disruption coincided with a Black Ops 6 promotional weekend featuring double XP bonuses. Many players felt they had missed out on valuable in-game progress due to the downtime.
Sony’s Response and PlayStation Plus Compensation
Following the outage, Sony issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience but offered little detail on what caused the issue beyond citing an “operational problem.” The vague explanation has left many fans speculating about what led to the disruption and whether Sony will implement measures to prevent similar issues in the future.
As compensation, Sony is offering all PlayStation Plus subscribers an additional five days of service. However, those without an active PlayStation Plus membership will receive no compensation.
PSN Back to Normal, but Questions Remain
With the PlayStation Network fully restored, players can once again access their games and services. However, Sony has yet to provide a detailed explanation for the outage, leaving many to wonder if future disruptions of this scale could happen again.
For now, PlayStation users can return to their games, but the incident serves as a reminder of how reliant modern gaming has become on online connectivity.
