Ghost of Tsushima Sequel Announced: ‘Ghost of Yōtei’ Coming in 2025
Fans of Ghost of Tsushima have reason to celebrate as Sucker Punch Productions officially revealed the long-awaited sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, during the Sony State of Play presentation. The game, set to release in 2025, introduces a new protagonist and a fresh setting, marking a departure from the story of Jin Sakai.
The announcement, which closed out the State of Play event, showcased stunning cinematics that teased what players can expect from the upcoming title. While details are still scarce, the game is set in the year 1603, roughly 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. The new narrative unfolds in the region surrounding Mount Yōtei, which is known today as Hokkaido. Sucker Punch describes the setting as “a far cry from the organized samurai clans of Tsushima,” and teases an original story featuring a new hero named Atsu.
In a PlayStation blog post following the announcement, Sucker Punch emphasized their commitment to the core pillars of the original game, including the concept of a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, the freedom to explore an expansive world, and the visual beauty that made Ghost of Tsushima so memorable. However, the developers also aim to innovate, with Ghost of Yōtei bringing new mechanics, weapons, and gameplay improvements that will take full advantage of the PlayStation 5’s capabilities.

“We love origin stories,” the developer stated, “and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.”
Like its predecessor, Ghost of Yōtei is deeply inspired by the works of legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. Ghost of Tsushima, which launched in July 2020, was praised for its cinematic influences and was even released with a “Kurosawa Mode” to enhance the samurai film experience. The game followed Jin Sakai’s journey to protect Tsushima Island during the Mongol invasion of Japan and was lauded for its stunning visuals and engaging combat. In addition to the single-player experience, a multiplayer mode titled Ghost of Tsushima: Legends was released in October 2020, followed by a Director’s Cut version in 2021.
Fans of the franchise can also look forward to the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima movie, directed by Chad Stahelski of John Wick fame, which is currently in development with Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions.
As the first Sucker Punch title built exclusively for the PlayStation 5, Ghost of Yōtei is expected to deliver cutting-edge visuals and an even more immersive open-world experience, promising to build on the legacy of its predecessor while introducing players to new adventures in Feudal Japan.
