Live-Action Mobile Suit Gundam Film Moves Forward with Bandai Namco and Legendary

After years of silence, the long-awaited live-action adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam is officially in full production. Legendary Entertainment and Bandai Namco Filmworks have signed an agreement to co-finance the project, marking a major step forward for the first-ever live-action Gundam film.

A New Era for Gundam

Originally announced in 2018, the project has seen little development news until now. However, with the formation of Bandai Namco Filmworks America, the companies have confirmed their commitment to bringing the beloved mecha franchise to the big screen. The film will be written and directed by Sweet Tooth’s Kim Mickle and is set for a global theatrical release.

With a legacy spanning 25 anime series, 34 animated films, 27 original anime productions, and a toy line generating over $900 million annually, Gundam is one of the most iconic franchises in anime history. Its transition to live-action is a significant milestone, blending its deep storytelling and mecha warfare with Hollywood production values.

Legendary & Bandai Namco’s Vision

Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks signed their co-financing agreement in January 2025, with Bandai Namco Filmworks America set to begin operations on April 1, 2025. This new subsidiary will oversee Gundam’s presence outside Japan and focus on expanding the brand’s global reach.

Previously, the project was being developed with Netflix, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) attached as director. However, the latest announcement confirms that the Gundam film will now head exclusively to theaters worldwide.

Honoring Gundam’s Legacy

First airing in 1979 and created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, Mobile Suit Gundam pioneered the “real robot” genre, moving away from simplistic good-vs-evil narratives and introducing war-torn human dramas with military-grade mechs. The original series depicted the Universal Century 0079 conflict, where the rebel space colonies of Zeon waged war against the Earth Federation, using powerful mobile suits to dominate the battlefield.

While plot details remain undisclosed, a teaser poster has been released, and the production teams assure fans that more information will follow.

The live-action Mobile Suit Gundam movie is finally taking shape—after years of waiting, fans can look forward to seeing the legendary franchise brought to life on the big screen.
