Two Paths, One Platform: Smith & Wesson Unveils the M&P Metal HD Series
On Friday, Smith & Wesson unveiled the new M&P Metal HD Series, expanding its Metal lineup with two distinct models: the M&P Metal HD and the M&P Competitor HD. Built on the same stainless-steel platform, both pistols deliver the enhanced ergonomics, reliability, and shootability shooters expect from the M&P 2.0 family, now refined to serve two clearly defined use cases. This dual release gives end users a straightforward choice between a duty-oriented configuration and a competition-focused variant.
While the M&P Metal HD and M&P Competitor HD share a common design foundation, each model brings purpose-driven refinements tailored to its role. Both pistols feature a full-size stainless-steel frame with updated texturing, a flat-face trigger, and a 5-inch match-grade barrel. Each utilizes an optics-ready slide, aggressive serrations, and Armornite finish across the slide and barrel for durability and corrosion resistance paired with iron sight systems designed to complement their intended use.
Model Differences
Although the two pistols share core architecture, the differences become clear when examining recoil behavior, slide design, barrel configuration, and out-of-the-box setup.
M&P Metal HD:

The Metal HD emphasizes control, durability, and shootability through mass. Its solid, non-windowed slide and all-stainless construction help reduce recoil and smooth out the impulse, making it one of the softest-shooting M&P pistols to date. It features a standard 5” inch stainless-steel barrel, less aggressive slide serrations, and a Night Fision tritium front sight paired with a blacked-out rear, well suited for duty or general-purpose use. The Metal HD ships with two 17-round magazines.
M&P Competitor HD:

Built for speed, the Competitor HD features deeper slide serrations and lightening cuts at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions to reduce reciprocating mass. It is equipped with a spiral-fluted stainless-steel barrel, further aiding in weight reduction and balance during rapid strings of fire. The sighting system shifts toward competition use with a HIVIZ tritium/fiber-optic front sight, offering faster visual pickup under varied lighting conditions. The Competitor HD ships with four 17-round magazines, reinforcing its competition-ready orientation.
Both models share Smith & Wesson’s optic mounting platform, include four interchangeable backstraps for ergonomic customization, and utilize Armornite surface treatment to reduce wear and extend service life. MSRP for the M&P Metal HD is $1,149, while the M&P Competitor HD retails for $1,299.
Shared Philosophy
By launching both models simultaneously, Smith & Wesson positions the Metal HD series as a flexible, performance-driven platform built around shooter preference rather than compromise. Whether configured for duty carry, training, or competition, both the Metal HD and Competitor HD are engineered to deliver consistency, control, and reliability under demanding conditions.
