Neon Genesis Evangelion Returns With an All-New Series Revealed at 30th Anniversary Celebration

After thirty years, the anime classic Neon Genesis Evangelion is officially returning with a brand-new series. The screenplay will be written by Yoko Taro, best known as the director of NieR: Automata, with the project co-produced by series creator Hideaki Anno and his animation studio, Studio Khara.

The announcement came during the Evangelion: 30 + 30 Anniversary Celebration, a three-day festival held in Yokohama, Japan. The event commemorated three decades of the franchise with exhibitions, panel Q&As, talk sessions, a kabuki adaptation, and a 15-minute animated short featuring Asuka Langley. The reveal of a new series marked the centerpiece of the celebration.

Joining Taro are two creatives deeply familiar with the Evangelion universe.Kazuya Tsurumaki, director of the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, and Toko Yatabe, a key animator on the Rebuild films, will serve as directors on the project. Their involvement suggests continuity in visual language and tone, even as the series moves into new narrative territory.

Composer Keiichi Okabe has been tapped to score the series. Okabe is widely recognized for his work on the NieR, Drakengard, and Tekken franchises, bringing a musical sensibility that blends melancholy, intensity, and atmosphere. Qualities that have long been associated with Evangelion’s emotional depth.

The new series will be produced by Studio Khara in collaboration with CloverWorks. While no plot details have been revealed, the official announcement emphasized that this will be a completely new storyline within the Evangelion universe. Following the reveal, Yoko Taro took to social media platform X, stating simply: “It’s been announced! I’ll do my best!”

Over the past three decades, audiences have witnessed the steady refinement of Hideaki Anno’s ideas are layered explorations of psychology, philosophy, trauma, identity, and human connection wrapped inside a sci-fi epic. From the original 1995 series to the Rebuild films, Evangelion has continually reexamined itself. Now, with a new creative voice guiding the screenplay, the franchise appears poised to evolve once again.

Infusing fresh ideas into a property as iconic as Evangelion is no small task. Yet with veteran talent and bold creative leadership at the helm, this new chapter could expand the universe in ways longtime fans never expected. For now, all we can do is wait and watch closely, as one of anime’s most influential franchises prepares for its next evolution.
