Today, Infinity Ward hosted a livestream on this weekend beta and crossplay functionality for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The crossplay feature will allow fans of Modern Warfare series to test their skills against Xbox, PS4, and PC gamers from around the world. The beta is open for anyone who preorder Modern Warfare.
To engage in crossplay players will have to have a Call of Duty account, which allow cross-platform friends list and parties without restriction. All multiplayer modes will be apart of the crossplay functionality. Competitive and ranked matches will not be apart of crossplay and crossplay voice chat is built in.
To reflect the diverse platforms and control schemes, lobby screens will indicate platforms and control schemes. It will allow for players to know who is running what. Players will be able to choose to match with only users using the same control device as you. Or players can be in a unfiltered lobby with mouse and keyboard and controllers coexist.
In a blog post Activision stayed that, “crossplay has been designed to factor play balancing across differences in controller type.” A point which production manager Paul Haile touched on during the livestream today.
Paul Haile also discusses balancing and control schemes in the livestream stating, “Not only have we spent a ton of time balancing and making sure the playing field is level between the control schemes, but also, you know, a ton of surprising user tests where we’re looking at high-skill user tests and seeing a mix of those control schemes in the top three every time.”
It seems that multiplayer will be a game of skill and nuance by the players. It doesn’t seem like mouse and keyboard will reign supreme. As, I thought it would.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta starts September 19th. For those who have preorder the game. Over everyone else who didn’t preorder who wants a taste of the multiplayer we will have our chance September 21st-23rd.
