Federal Ammuntion has released their new defense ammunition Hydro-Shok Deep in .380 Auto. The new defensive ammunition is designed for subcompact and micro pistols. The new ammunition Hydra-Shok Deep by Federal adds a new level of effectiveness to subcompact pistols chambered in .380. Federal asserts that the new ammunition is the first to offer consistent penetration beyond the FBI recommended 12-inch minimum of ballistic gel and heavy clothing.
Federal tested the new Hydra-Shok Deep ammunition through rigorous FBI scenarios of target penetration. Bullets where shot through 10% ordnance gelatin, automotive safety glass, plywood, wallboard, and heavy clothing specified by FBI protocols. Larger calibers such as 9mm and .45 ACP are able to meet and exceed this specifications but, .380 is designed to achieve the best possible blend of performance and design for subcompact handguns.
When designing the Hydra-Shok Deep to meet those FBI specifications engineers at Federal went to the drawing board to find the proper balance. Engineers investigated design elements such as bullet weight, jacket, profile, and hollow point design. Investigating these design elements allowed the engineers to change and optimize the design for .380 Auto.
Federal’s testing of the new ammunition resulted in penetration between 13”-13.5” inches of penetration through gel. When testing penetration through heavy clothing the Hydra-Shok ammunition was punching through 13.25”-14” inches of material. Federal engineers used pistols with barrel lengths between 2 3/4”- 3 1/2” inches. The powder load is perfectly balanced to allow for consistent penetration and expansion even out or longer pistol barrels. Allowing the Hydra-Shok Deep .380 Auto to boasts 1000 feet per second muzzle velocity.
Federal’s new Hydra-Shok Deep .380 auto is available now at retailers and on Federal Ammunition website. The new ammo retails at $26.99 for twenty rounds.
