Yesterday, New York Office of the Attorney General has announced its intention to dissolve the NRA after an 18-month investigation of financial fraud and abuse. Attorney General Letitia James claims in the lawsuit that the NRA used millions of dollars and this misallocation of funds added up to $64 million dollars over three years. Over the past few years the NRA has been under fire over reports of rampant misuse of funds. Those reports alleged lavish spending of membership funds and donations.
Below is additional information from the NPR article regarding the lawsuit filed by New York office of the Attorney General. Link to article will be provide below.
The Attorney General of New York took action today to dissolve the National Rifle Association, following an 18-month investigation that found evidence the powerful gun rights group is “fraught with fraud and abuse.”
Attorney General Letitia James claims in a lawsuit filed Thursday that she found financial misconduct in the millions of dollars, and that it contributed to a loss of more than $64 million over a three year period.
The suit alleges that top NRA executives misused charitable funds for personal gain, awarded contracts to friends and family members, and provided contracts to former employees to ensure loyalty.
Seeking to dissolve the NRA is the most aggressive sanction James could have sought against the not-for-profit organization, which James has jurisdiction over because it is registered in New York. James has a wide range of authorities relating to nonprofits in the state, including the authority to force organizations to cease operations or dissolve. The NRA is all but certain to contest it.
NPR has reached out to the NRA for comment, but has not received a response.
Since the filing of the lawsuit the NRA has released a statement to the press regarding the lawsuit.
NRA President Statement
This was a baseless, premeditated attack on our organization and the Second Amendment freedoms it fights to defend. You could have set your watch by it: the investigation was going to reach its crescendo as we move into 2020 election cycle. It’s an transparent attempt to score political points and attack the leading voice in opposition to the leftist agenda. This has been a power grab by political opportunist— a desperate move that is a part of a rank political vendetta. Our members won’t be intimidated or bullied in their defense of political and constitutional freedoms.
As evidenced by the lawsuit filed by the NRA today against NY AG, we not only will not shrink from this fight—we will confront and prevail.
