On Wednesday, the House passed a series of new gun control measures which seek to tighten the nation’s gun laws. The House passed this gun reform legislation in response to the devastating Buffalo and Uvalde shootings.

The potential new legislation was mainly passed along party lines with a 223-204 vote, with five republicans joining and all but two Democrats.

The new legislation is called “Protecting Our Kids Act”, the legislation is a slate of eight gun control bills that cleared the House Judiciary Committee last week. The series of new gun measures include: raising the minimum age to buy a rifle from 18 to 21, banning standard capacity magazines, strengthen laws on gun trafficking and “straw purchases”, enhancing background checks, serializing “ghost guns”, making bump stocks apart of the NFA, and introducing firearm safety storage requirements with criminal penalties if violated.

The slate of new gun control measures now heads to the evenly split Senate, which is not expected to take up the House passed legislation. The legislation as it stands has a little chance of passing through a 50-50 Senate floor. The Senate negotiators seek to craft a slimmer legislation that is designed to garner Republican support to overcome a potential filibuster scenario on the Senate floor.
