Earlier this week, the Television Academy announced the nominations for the 76th Emmys. Leading the pack with 25 nominations was FX’s critically acclaimed limited series, Shogun.
Shogun is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. The book was previously adapted into a popular miniseries in the 1980s. The latest incarnation of this source material is enthralling and engaging, depicting a foreigner’s attempts to navigate the world and politics of 17th-century Japan.
The series received an Emmy nomination for Best Drama. Hiroyuki Sanada, who portrayed Lord Yoshii Toranaga, was nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Series, while Anna Sawai, who played Toda Mariko, received a nomination for Best Actress in a Drama Series.

For Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Tadanobu Asano, who plays the beloved samurai Kashigi Yabushiga, was nominated. Takehiro Hira also received a nomination for his role as the ambitious Ishido Kazunari. Additionally, Néstor Carbonell was nominated for Best Guest Actor for his portrayal of Rodrigues in the series.
FX’s Shogun also received nominations in design and technical categories such as production design, original dramatic score, stunt performance, sound editing, and casting. Christopher Ross and Sam McCurdy were nominated for Best Costume Design, while Frederick E.O. Toye was nominated for Best Series Directing.
Fans of the show will have to wait until September to see if Shogun will win any awards in the categories it’s nominated for. The development cycle for Shogun was long and arduous, seemingly stuck in development purgatory, taking nearly ten years to come to fruition. This is a significant achievement for the Shogun team and FX, which took a chance on the limited series.

Shogun was originally written as a limited series for FX. After its conclusion, it left fans clamoring for more of its thoughtfully crafted story, rich world building, and the diverse and intricate motivations of its characters. In May, fans were delighted by news from co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo that Shogun would be returning for two more seasons. This change has moved Shogun into the drama race as well. The show will face stiff competition in that category, but it is also one of the most prestigious categories of the Emmy Awards, putting Shogun in competition with heavyweights within the industry. We look forward to seeing how Shogun fares in September at the 76th Emmy Awards.
