On Monday, Microsoft officially shut down access to the Xbox 360 Marketplace. Gamers from around the world are saddened by the loss of the iconic console’s storefront. The Xbox 360 was the best-selling console in Microsoft’s history, with over 85 million units sold. Its greatest success and popularity occurred at a pivotal time in gaming history, as consoles transitioned online in a substantial way. The Xbox 360 Marketplace was a key part of this digital revolution.

Released on November 22, 2005, the Xbox 360 transformed the gaming landscape, ushering in a new age of multiplayer gaming that many enjoy today. The marketplace was just shy of reaching its 20th anniversary before Microsoft decided to shut it down. Now, the PlayStation 3 store remains as a testament to a bygone era in gaming, maintaining its marketplace. Sony attempted to close the PlayStation 3 marketplace but faced intense criticism from global fans, leading the company to reverse its decision. In 2019, Nintendo officially closed the Wii Shop.

The Video Game History Foundation commented on the closure of the Xbox 360 Marketplace on X, stating, “Today the Xbox 360 Marketplace shuts down for good, taking hundreds of games and DLC off the market, with no legal way to access them.” They added, “We’re working to fix copyright law for game preservation, but for now, we figured a cake wouldn’t hurt.”

Before its closure, Microsoft ran significant deals on the Xbox 360 Marketplace, offering one last chance to purchase digital Xbox 360 titles that will no longer be accessible. To Microsoft’s credit, the company has invested in its backward-compatible library, making older games available on newer consoles such as the Xbox One and Xbox Series X. However, many games that had digital-only releases are not compatible with newer consoles. This lack of access to digital-only games could pose a potential legal issue for Microsoft, PlayStation, and Nintendo. Games purchased before the storefront closure will still be accessible offline.

In recent days, fans have reminisced and shared their experiences of the Xbox 360 and its multiplayer era. The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii represented a second golden era of gaming, marked by innovation, creativity, and genre-defining franchises. Larry Herb, former Xbox executive better known to the community as Major Nelson, commented on the closure of the marketplace on X, saying, “Almost 19 years on, all good things must come to an end. We are in the final 24 hours (or so) of the Xbox 360 Marketplace.” He added, “It was my pleasure sharing all the thousands of marketplace sales and updates I’ve given over the years. Thank you for having fun, playing fair, and providing feedback.”

It’s been real, Xbox 360 Marketplace. Thank you for all the gaming memories. Rest in peace.
