The Penguin Takes Center Stage: Why Batman Won’t Appear in HBO Max’s Gotham Spin-off

Rumors have been circulating that Robert Pattinson might make a cameo as The Dark Knight in the upcoming HBO Max series The Penguin. However, according to Showrunner Lauren LeFranc and Executive Producer Matt Reeves, a Batman appearance isn’t necessary for the story they’re telling.

LeFranc told SFX Magazine, “Matt’s films are through the lens of Batman, so you’re high up, looking down on the city. It’s a different perspective. With The Penguin, you’re in the city streets, you’re in the grit and the muck and the grime. He’s looking up, wanting to claw his way to the top.”

Reeves echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that The Penguin stands on its own without the need for Batman to appear. “I don’t feel like [the show is] missing something fundamental,” Reeves said. “I feel like it’s an extension of what is fundamentally there. We know this is the world of Batman. You’re going down a different alley. So the specter of Batman is there. The specter of the Riddler is there. The specter of everything that happens in the last movie is there. It informs it. And it’s exactly where we begin.”

The Penguin is the first spin-off from The Batman, which debuted three years ago to critical acclaim and grossed nearly $800 million for Warner Brothers. As the series sets the tone for Reeves’ larger Epic Crime Saga universe, the focus remains on exploring the depths of Gotham City through the eyes of its notorious characters, without relying on Batman’s direct involvement. Whether this approach resonates with audiences will be crucial in determining the future of Reeves’ expanding Gotham universe.
