Sega Partners with Netflix to Brings Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and Stranger Than Heaven to Film and TV

In a surprise announcement, Sega and Netflix broke the news of a multi-title partnership to bring iconic game franchises to life through film and animation. The partnership will transform Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven into films while creating a new kid-focused Sonic the Hedgehog animated series.

What We Need to Know

Crazy Taxi
  • Crazy Taxi will receive a film adaptation of the iconic racing game for the big screen.
  • The film will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. Mand previously wrote the screenplay for the 2025 Naked Gun reboot.
  • The movie is being produced by Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara, who have all been involved with the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise.
  • Crazy Taxi is expected to be the first of the projects to release and is currently slated for 2027.
Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Sonic the Hedgehog will receive a new animated series on Netflix.
  • The series is currently in development with Carlos Stevens of Love, Death & Robots and Toru Nakahara.
  • The new animated series will target an upper-preschool and elementary-school audience.
  • In the joint press release, the show is described as a “high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded series built for kids who want to feel a little edge, a little attitude, and a lot of ‘that’s my crew’ wish fulfillment.”
Stranger Than Heaven
  • Stranger Than Heaven is in the early stages of development.
  • No writer or director has been attached to the project yet. Toru Nakahara is attached as a producer.

The Bottom Line

As video games continue to generate successful box-office returns, there will likely be an influx of television and film companies willing to invest in these properties.

This is a major investment by Sega as the company looks to increase its brand exposure through another medium, while Netflix continues to build its portfolio of video game adaptations.

Hopefully, we will see more of these collaborations down the road. What video game franchise would you like to see brought to the screen in the future?
