The Canadian government recently announced that the SIG SAUER P320 will be the next service pistol for the Canadian military. The P320 will be replacing the aging and antiquated Browning Hi-Power pistol. Canada will initially procure a batch of 7,000 pistols and holsters for use in the Army. There will be a follow-up procurement option to secure an additional 9,500 pistols for the Canadian Army, Air Force, Navy, and Military Police.
The new service pistol will be titled the C22 and will be full frame option of the SIG P320 platform. The firearms will be procured through Charlton Co. LTD. out of Victoria, B.C. The value of the contract is reportedly worth $ 3.7 million.
Last week, the Australian military official replaced the aging Browning Hi-Power with the SIG P320 XCarry Pro.
The Canadian military has been looking for a replacement for the Hi-Power since 2011. At that time the Canadian Department of National Defence planned to order 10,000 new pistols but the project was cancelled due to reluctance of firearms manufacturers to share technical data packages with Colt Canada for local production.
The search for a new pistol began again in 2017. Canadian Special Forces used the P320 platform for several years. Then, in 2021 Canadian news outlasts reported the P320 was removed from service due to an alleged misfire of the firearm. Information was not revealed if the P320 pistol was later returned to service. In 2020, the search for a new replacement for the Hi-Power began anew for the Canadian government and finally settling on the SIG P320.
The Canadian government’s press release states that the contract will include the SIG P320, a holster system, spares, and operator and maintenance training. Delivery of the new C22 pistols will begin in mid-2023.
Below, is the full press release from the Canadian government on the C22 service pistol.
Press Release
Today, the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence, announced a contract award valued at $3.2 million (USD) to provide the Canadian Army with new pistols and holster systems. Following an open and transparent competitive process, M.D. Charlton Co. Ltd. of Victoria, B.C., was awarded the contract for the C22 full frame modular pistol (Sig Sauer P320) and holster system.
The Canadian government will procure an initial amount of 7,000 pistols and holster systems for the Canadian Army. Additional options for up to 9,500 pistols will be available under the contract to cover off the remaining requirements for the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Navy and Military Police. Pistol delivery is anticipated to begin in mid-2023.
The C22 full frame modular pistol (Sig Sauer P320) will use the existing ammunition and have similar ballistic performance as the existing Browning pistol. The wide range of improvements will include expanded magazine capacity, lighter weight, improved ergonomics, and an indicator identifying whether or not the weapon is loaded – visible from many angles. It will also ensure ambidextrous controls to enable both left and right hand users the ability to operate the weapon effectively.
