The Witcher 3 Returns: CDPR Unveils Songs of the Past Expansion

CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is widely regarded as one of the greatest RPGs ever made. Since its release in 2015, the game has sold more than 60 million copies worldwide and continues to attract both new and returning players. Now, more than a decade later, CD Projekt Red is returning to Geralt of Rivia’s story with a brand-new expansion.

Earlier this week, CD Projekt Red officially announced The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, the game’s third major expansion and the first full expansion since 2016’s Blood and Wine. The announcement marks a surprising return to one of gaming’s most celebrated worlds, especially with the next Witcher title already in development.

CD Projekt Red announced the expansion through its official X account, stating:

“Medallion’s humming… that can only mean one thing! It’s time to announce The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past!

The studio also revealed that players will once again take to the Path as Geralt of Rivia in a brand-new adventure. Songs of the Past is being co-developed alongside Fool’s Theory, a team comprised of industry veterans that includes developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3. The expansion is currently planned for release in 2027 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.”

As of right now, details surrounding the expansion remain limited. CD Projekt Red has not revealed any story information, new locations, gameplay features, or expansion size. What we do know is that Songs of the Past represents the studio’s first major expansion for The Witcher 3 in more than a decade and signals that CDPR still sees value in expanding Geralt’s story and bridging the gap into The Witcher 4.

Final Thoughts

While information is scarce at the moment, the announcement alone is enough to generate excitement among longtime fans of the franchise. Few players expected CD Projekt Red to revisit The Witcher 3 after all these years, making Songs of the Past one of the more surprising gaming announcements of the year.

With more information expected later this summer, fans won’t have to wait too long to learn what new adventures await Geralt. Until then, it looks like the White Wolf has one more journey left before the future of The Witcher series takes center stage.
