At Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, monumental news was announced: the Russo Brothers will return to direct the newly named Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Currently, the Russo Brothers are set to direct both Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Avengers: Doomsday is slated for a May 2026 release, followed by Secret Wars in May 2027.

It has also been confirmed through a press release that the Russo Brothers will co-produce these movies with Marvel Studios under their AGBO production studio. Stephen McFeely has been brought on board to write the scripts for both films. McFeely is another familiar face from the MCU, best known for his writing on the Captain America movies and Avengers: Endgame.

The fifth Avengers movie was originally supposed to be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. However, a year later, Cretton stepped down to focus on other MCU projects, such as the sequel to Shang-Chi.

Avengers: Doomsday was originally titled Kang’s Dynasty back at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. Marvel Studios had to pivot drastically after reports surfaced that Jonathan Majors was involved in a domestic violence situation and was subsequently fired following his domestic violence conviction last year. Now, Marvel seemingly has a path forward with the return of the Russo Brothers. In time, we will see how this decision impacts Marvel Studios and the MCU in the future.
