I began reading our First President’s address and it struck a cord with me. All the issues and themes we discuss today in America are covered in his farewell address. Instead of me trying to write something myself for President’s Day. I would rather lay silent, step back and let our First President George Washington speak to the nation again. His words are powerful, honest, and deep.
Many would tell you the pen is mightier than the sword. In many ways the written word is a deadly adversary. A pen is the tool of a writer and of a creative mind. Upon paper a writer let’s us into their imagination, hopes, dreams, and fears.
The actions taken by Mr. Attey are ill conceived and reckless at minimum and are dangerous and incendiary at their height. His actions at that Wal-Mart does nothing to advance the conversation about violence in this nation. His actions only seek to further entrench the political divide that exists in this nation.
Today, two hundred forty-three years ago brave men of the Second Continental Congress stood against the tyranny of a monarchy. In standing against that tyranny they declared their Independence from its reign.
On this day seventy-five years ago young men of the Allied Forces where preparing to raid the beaches of Normandy. Young American soldiers were preparing for the daunting task laid before them to secure Normandy beach, guarantee a Allied Victory, and change the course of the War.
Everyone voice is essential and valid even if we fundamentally have opposing views. We must have the presence and ability to voice our discord with civility. To engage each other on the complex issues that are challenging this nation. While working with each other to create answers to the challenges we face as a nation.
Freedom. Is an inherent right of all people. The freedom to speak freely, sovereignty to walk your own path, and the pursuit of happiness. Freedom is embedded into the core of this Nation. Freedom is one of the cornerstones of our Constitution and our Democracy here in America.
